Default 04 530i Passenger Sensor Mat warranty question??

Hi Guys,

It's been a while! Had a quick scenario I wanted to run by you all. Early 2014 my 04 530i started displaying a "Passenger Restraint System Error" message. When I took it in they said it was due to the passenger sensor mat issue for which there was an extended warranty out for which had a 10 year limit. Unforunately My car was over my 10 year period by 3 months so they wouldn't work on it and gave me a quote for $1050.

After calling and chasing BMW of North America for 3 months in an attempt to get them to grandfather me in or give me a decent discount for the job, I had no success. They were a nightmare to deal with it to say the least and pretty much convinced me I would never buy a BMW again sadly.

Anyways, after going through old service docs I noticed the passenger sensor Mat was replaced back in 2009 under warranty when I took it in for something else. Since it went bad again apparently in 2014, do I have any leverage in getting them to fix it again? I wonder if the new parts had/have a 10 year extension as well??

Please do let me know. Thanks in advance!

I'd suspect the warranty period applies to the vehicle date, not the part. Parts replaced under warranty usually have their own coverage period, 1/12 and 3/36 are common durations. Unfortunately warranty periods are pretty black and white - you are either covered or your not.

What is the part cost VS dealer labor? If you have been loyal to the dealership for sales & service, I could see them throwing you a bone possibly.

You could try and haggle with the local dealer.

You can also tell BMW NA you are going to file a report of a failed repair part with the NHTSA.

You can buy the seat mat and do the repair yourself. I don't think it is super expensive.

You can do one of the seat mat bypass procedures (which effectively enable the air bag 100% of the time). Just don't put a car seat in the front.

I had the same issue with the mat sensor . Had it replaced at 50,000 . Then at 100,000 it went off again . I got a good tip from a reliable source , and I fixed the issue on my car.

The leather contracts and shrinks and puts tension on the super sensitive mat sensor and trips the error .. By getting saddle soap lathered up with leather conditioner I applied 3 heavy saturated coats for three days straight ,worked it and rubbed it in good into the leather . The car sat for two weeks while I did some maintenance repairs .

After the third time clearing the error , it finally stayed off and has not came back .
