Anybody use Permatex type sealant RTV instead of BMW Rubber gasket for valve cover, oil pan and such. Tried searching but doesn't seem anybody has done it. I would think it would last longer then the rubber gasket....

I've heard of people using a light bead of permatex in addition to the factory seals, but never as a replacement for them. ive actually worked on a few cars that had a bead of it on the VCG.

yes there is. You put it in the corners and curve "worry" areas. It saves you in the long run.

I just did my valve covers and upper timing covers on my 545i. I would use it on both sides of the timing gaskets they're mainly metal. As far as the valve cover gaskets just put it on the half moons and couple other spots to hold the gasket in place when you flip it over and set the cover on. On the metal face I only put it where the upper timing cover joins the valve cover.

If you have a 6 cylinder ignore what I said about the timing cover and just put some to hold the gasket in place, did it on my sisters 328xi.

The rubber gaskets are grooved therefore should not need gasket maker. Talked to a couple BMW indys about it and that's what they recommended.
