are there any common problems I need to look for with these cars? it has high mileage roughly 140k miles
thanks in advance.

Good job i just popped on,,,,
Have you bought the car yet. ??
I bought a e39 525D 2003 sport around 2 1/2 years ago with 152k miles, i knew the car as it was my old bosses car so when i was aksed to collect the car and sell it i thought,,,, lets have a look hear. After getting a local garage to have a good look i made an offer well below the book price and all he said was take it away.
Things to look out for
Suspension, front and rear, they tend to start going around the 120k mark, the fronts were shagged, and the rears were very sloppy so i decided to replace every thing.
Prop shaft rubber vibration damper, this will defo be warn, so replace it
have a good look at discs and pads, i replaced mine
Leather, the seats are hard wearing, better then other BMW,s that i have owned but look out for the usual wearing on the driver boulster, also look out for tale tell signs like gear knob worn, driver door kick panel accessive wear, and the gear surround gator worn, all signed of it done more miles then it says on the clock or just had a hard life
Check the engine oil,,,,,,if it smell like a dirty oil rag then it needs a change.
Things you need to do, oil and filter change, if its a manual change the gear box and rear diff oil, decat it, defo go for a remap, egr bypass valve, and then enjoy the drive.
I changed the oil every 6k, the crank case breather filter every 2nd oil change. There is no swirl flap,s with the 2.5d so your ok there. Now i just sold mine with 192k miles on the clock and she still looked clean and tidy for a 3003 model.
