Upgrading nav from 4:3 to 16:9 - what about TMC?

I am helping a friend upgrading his 1996 540i 4:3 mk1 based nav system to 16:9 monitor and mk4 computer. I think I have the nav upgrade part sorted out - bought monitor and computer from eBay, getting the mk1 to mk4 converter cable from BMW. Have one question though: The current nav system does not have TMC. Previously there was a TMC module that could be added, but it appears to be discontinued. Does anybody know if upgrading the radio module to BM53/54 will add TMC functionality?
Also, if I do upgrade the radio is there something to watch out for? The car is equipped with the DSP HIFI system. From this link it appears that there is a setting in the radio service menu for DSP/no DSP Radio Service PDF - is that all?
