Suffering from smell of hot / burnt oil inside car when sationarty / car idling etc. No oil leaks found but when outside acr with enfgine running, the smell is also apparent as tho' oil was on a hot surface. Next step is to possible replace the breather valve ?? - any comments ?
Car is 520SE i, 2001, 75000 miles.

Replacing the breather valve wouldn't hurt.

Check closely around the valve covers and anywhere near the intake to the cabin filters. The only areas where oil would get hot enough to burn are the cylinder heads, block, and exhaust manifolds. Either you have a leak or someone spilled oil causing the burning/smell.

Sorry - a bit late on this one, but I had similar on my 525i MSport. I found out that it was the Rocker Cover Gasket. The old one goes hard and brittle and allows small drops to seep near the drivers end and the droplets drop onto the exhaust manifold - hence the smell.

I replaced mine and all oil smell gone :-)

Found passenger side cabin air filter incorrectly connected at duct to firewall connection. Changed valve cover gasket and reseated the duct when I reinstalled it.

On my 2004 E60 530i M54 engine, the burnt / hot oil smell was caused by a frozen engine oil separator hose that was leaking oil. The hose was replaced with an insulated version. A new dip stick guide tube was also installed. There was a TSB SI B 11 008 03 for this issue on this engine.
