Hi, dear forum members, owners of E39s

I'd like us to share our experiences. Particularly, how many years have you owned your E39 and what problems occurred with the car? I've own my 1997 BMW 523i from 2007 and there were following problems (please sorry for some incorrect technical words but I hope you will understand):
1. The iron rope that is used to open the bonnet;
2. The radiator;
3. The fan used not to let overheat;
4. The detail regulating the climate control;
5. The front shock absorbers.

Please don't mention the regular repairs like oil change, break pads, etc

My E39 is about 8 years old....

1) Rope still in perfect condition (and I open my hood alot)
2) Radiator lasted 7 years before breaking at the joint where the pipe from the engine connects to the radiator itself'
3) Fan still in top order
4) I had a bit of bad luck with my Air Conditioning... went bad about 3 times ... can't remember off hand now what the problem was ...but it was electronic.
5) Front shocks should have lasted me long but I hit a deep pot hole once and basically broke the endlink and wrecked the rubber seals on the stabilizer links, tie rods and control arms. Also the bolts holding the control arms became slightly loose. So check that every so often.

Also you should check the health of the serpentine belt, power steering pump, alternator and belt tensioners.
