Hello!

I Have a question about my shock absorbers. The problem I have is this: I bought my car 2 months ago and I have two problems with it. The first is, the steering wheel is shaking sometimes at around 90km/hr. The wheels are aligned three times and they are okay. A BMW specialist inspected my car and he said it was all okay. What can it be? Maybe it is the following problem I have, I feel everything on the road, even the sensors in the tarmac! The dampers are not stuck but it is not easy to push them in. If I drive on the motorway it is not comfortable and I am almost compare it with my former car, a Beetle of `74. How smooth is a E39? The specialist told me that I didn`t have a M-suspension. Next week my car is going again to the garage, they gonna test the shocks first but is their something I can test or do? Does an E39 have gas damping and could this be the problem?

Thank you!

ps. What does the Grey dots mean on the shocks? Front 3x grey and rear 2x grey.

The E39 5 Series is a very comfortable car. I have a 1997 523i with 15inch wheels and the comfort is excellent. I think you should take your car to a real specialist who can solve the problem. I guess your shock absorbers have to be changed.

Thank you for your answer, I drove another E39 523i aut yesterday and it had the same movements en shockabsorbing almost. It was a little bit softer so I think I had to much expectations for this car. Before this car I had a Beetle from `74, I think it costs your feelings for real car driving ;-). Or two different cars have the same faulty shocks? I don`t think so, so I settle for this.

In my opinion owning a 2002 520i E39, it's definitely not the smoothest ride, but has a more firm suspension for sportier handling I guess. Even though you do feel a lot of the road's bumps, I prefer it over a car with a very soft springs and shocks that float up and down and sway sharply around corners.
