Whining from Diff?

have a whining noise from diff when i slow down in gear.

noise not there when speeding up or in neutral.

Any idea's/?

is quiet noisey and worse at higher speed.

its a 2006 525D manual

done around 40k

not under warranty due to mileage done in short time.

In any event, 40k still places you under the 50k/4year mark for warranty coverage. I never heard of a warranty denial based on how fast you accumulate mileage. That's pretty scary - who, in fact, makes the determination that you drove your car way to much to be covered? 20K/year doesn't seem to be outrageously unreasonable, especially if your commute to work is a legnthy one.
