Default Where do I obtain gearbox updates and how do I apply them?

I've been Googling all aft and haven't found a definitive answer to this.

Last night I installed INPA, NCSExpert, SSS Progman etc. on my laptop.

Do these things come with the software needed for updates usually? Or is there something specific I have to obtain?

The car's a Pre-LCI 535D. In the course of my reading I have read that software later than 2008 is more complicated to apply. Is this true?

And also, do you have to update all modules when updating the gearbox?

I think this would mean your car needs to go in for a complete software update? and they say dont update unless its not broken or not functioning as it may cause more issues...
