Hello, E60 eagle pilots!! I am SOARISTO from Tokio, Japan.

I changed the genuine fog-lamp to high-efficiency HID.

I have two types of fog-lamps. The one is "PIAA HID Projector Fog-Lamp 999CX", the other is "PIAA HID Driving-Lamp 610HID".

PIAA says in their advertisement that "999CX is the most powerful and most efficient fog-lamp in the world".

"999CX" has the almost same size(wide) as the genuine fog-lamp.

First, I tried to swap the genuine fog-lamp to "999CX".

Remove the head-lamp unit.

This is the genuine fog-lamp for M-Sport Package.

Remove the genuine fog-lamp unit,

Remove the genuine fog-lamp cover,

And build in "999CX". It looks as if it is the genuine fog-lamp.

Now, I introduce to you "High-Wattage HID Ballast".

Although a standard ballast's output is 35W(ECE99 regulation), the High-Wattage Ballast's output is variable from 25W to 65W.

More details, please refer to these.

(Sorry. These pages are written in Japanese. In order to translate, please click the link "Altavista" at the upper right of each pages.)

This is "High-Wattage HID Ballast". Because it generates heat extremely, it is equipped with a big heat-sink.

I analyzed and changed a part of circuit of the ballast.

Then, I checked the brightness and shapes of those two HID fog-lamps.

This is the shape of "999CX". It is concentrated on the center, but it is not so bright as I expected.

I think that "It is not so powerful and so efficient fog-lamp in the world".

This is the shape of "610HID". It is cut horizontally, and it is so bright!!

So, I decided to use not "999CX" but "610HID".

This is the comparison image of the genuine fog-lamp and "610HID". The High-Wattage Ballast is driven at 35W(ECE99 regulation).

The brightness of "610HID" is 9,400cd(Candela).

Next, The High-Wattage Ballast is driven at 65W.

The brightness of "610HID" is 22,600cd(Candela). It is more than twice as bright as standard ballast!!

It is bright like hell fire.

And it seems that we can play baseball or football game at midnight.

#It can not be switched on a public road, only on a racing circuit.

It's a very nice job, but I'm afraid it'll blind coming traffic. Especially, Mr. Iceman. He'll shoot you in a blink.
However, I give you alot of credit for being creative.

Very nice job.

Did you have any problem with error messages saying that there was a problem with the fog lights?

This would be a good way to get long range driving lights for driving Western US highways.

I have no problem. No error message comes out.

The Light Control Computer flows a few current to each bulbs, when ignition key was turned on (System Initializing Process). I connected wiring to High-Wattage Ballast so that the checking process does not be disturbed. I solved the problem already.

Soaristo:

It'g good to hear that no error messages pops up.

As you have sucessfully insatalled HID auxiliary lamps - what is you opinion about installing the BMW Auxiliary Headlights in place of the standard fog lights?

See the attached Real OEM page. Do you think it might work?

Hey SOARISTO, so no error messages at all huh?

soc_fans,
How did Darwin hook up your HID fogs? Maybe he can try SOARISTO's method.
