Anyone out there know how to change out spark plugs? Please post a DIY for us less privileged folk. What brand of plugs would be best? Cost? Location?

What engine do you have? I recently changed the plugs on my 545 to Denso Iridiums. Due to the incredible difficulty of getting the left rear plug of the V8 changed I wouldn't recommend it. Took me several hours and it's impossible to know what, if any, power gains I got. I wouldn't have done it had I known how difficult it would be. The sixes may be a different story.

Hey brandsb. I have a 2005 545i so it would be the N62, I think. Did you do your plugs at <100K? Did you change them for a reason? I was talking to my SA and he doesn't advise I mess with them [but then again, he said the same thing about the Angel Eyebrights and what a difference that made!] Thanks for the help...

I can't help you decide about changing the plugs (although I don't see much of a reason on a car with relatively low mileage) but if you decide to do it, here's what you'll need to do:

Master_RA__Replacing_all_spark_plugs__N62__N62TU_.pdf

Have fun!

Rudy - thanks for the PDF. It covers removing the ignition coil specifically - doesn't mention location of spark plugs and how to access them. Am I missing something??? I may have to buy Boschs and ask my SA to install them....

I don't mean to be a wise guy (but I usually am anyway) but if you can't find the spark plugs, you probably ought not to be attempting to tackle this task!

Point well taken..... Actually - I did find them finally [in my defense], but am not going to spend the extra time and $ on tools/socket wrenches, etc. Let my SA earn his stripes on this one.... Thanks for the help anyways...will make a good DIY if someone can post the instructions for all to see..

I have 24k miles. I purchased the plugs with the belief I'd try them and assess possible power gains....this assumed it would be relatively easy to switch back and forth. Once into the job, it was apparent that this was a much more complex job, requiring a unique combination of extensions and joint sockets to get the rear plugs out and in. Like I said, in retrospect, I wouldn't go through this time and expense again for the possibility of a minor performance improvement.

Did you look here?:
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?mo...hg=12&fg=05

It looks like they have two part numbers, one for NGK and one for Bosch...
