I bought a complete set of soft close door modules from a junker in northern California. They arrived today and I got immediately to work.
I wasn't sure how complex it would be, but it isn't at all. Power and ground are the only connections needed and the most complex part of the job is running constant 12 volts into the door - hopefully that doesn't kill my battery - but this is what DIY is all about; trial and error.
I got the driver side rear door done and now I am taking a break. i took a quick video from my cell phone to demonstrate the action - hopefully you can see what is going on. Once I am done I will take a better video in proper lighting.

On a 7 series the lock and soft-close motor are all one unit in the door and there is a separate module that controls it all. On the E60 the lock/latch and motor assy. are two modules, both in the door.
These are from a 2008 M5, that's about as 5 series as you can get.

It seems to be a whole yard - eBay name German Only: http://stores.ebay.com/German-Only
If you find something you want you have to call - the prices were quite negotiable when I did.

Damn Chase, lol. You're a busy guy, but seems like when you have time, you do go about tinkering!
And yes, I would definitely haggle the guy. I just looked at the listings he has, and it's pretty outrageous in my opinion (for a lot of the stuff).
