how do i know if i have the polygon airbag or the round airbag? i have the standard steering wheel.

I received the trim pieces on last Friday. It came with 6 small black colour screws. When I looked at the silver trim pieces, it had 2 holes in the bottom and a clip too. So, I assume that each trim piece needs 2 small black colour screws. There are 2 extra spare screws ....

I will install it when the weather is getting warmer in Boston. Spring just arrived today. Regarding to the airbag, should I install it back to the steering wheel and turn the key to II position before reconnect the battery negative terminal ?? This practice is used in Volvo steering wheel airbag installation to make sure airbag doesn't deploly accidantally. The airbag warning light would not come on, right ??

Since you mentioned that we should disconnect the airbag on the steering wheel side, why we should not disconnect the airbag on the airbag side ?

Whatever you do, make sure every connector in the steering wheel (inc airbag) is all connected up and airbag secured in teh wheel BEFORE connecting the battery!!!!

With BMW, if you reconnect the battery and the airbag is NOT connected, you will get the "airbag faulty red light" in the dashboard display.

Make sure the key is NOT in the ignition at all when you reconnect the battery.

Connectors:

The reason why I suggest that you disconnect the airbag from the wheel using the connector on the wheel side is that it is just ONE connector block - whereas if you disconnect the connectors on the airbag itself, you will need to detach THREE connectors. Besides, the 3 airbag connectors are more fragile than the big multiblock connector on the wheel side!

Here are 4 images:



This one shows the 4 clips that hold the airbag to the internal metal frame of the wheel. You can see the trajectory of the screwdriver that you have to insert to push against the horizontal metal clip that forms the 4 retaining clips. Basically, when you press the screwdriver against the it, the clip bends inwards on both sides and thus releases the airbag from the wheel. The ECU is in the bottom "spoke".




Top down view of the ECU. To the right of it is where the multiblock airbag connector plugs in. It is held by one retaining lug that you have to push together and then the connector pulls out vertically. Next image will show you the connector.




The airbag connector with the plastic lug on the front of the connector.




Now you see why I suggest to disconnect the ONE connector and not the three on the airbag itself! The Green and Black plugs at the centre are fixed securely and should not be released at all. The connector marked "fragile" is for the horn switch. It is attached to a sort of ribbon cable and it's not worth undoing this connector.

You should be able to detach the airbag from the wheel without having to detach the cable from the clamp on the back of the airbag.


Hope all this helps. Much easier 'done' than said I think...
