I come across that standard 545i has 2 pieces silver trims on the steering wheel. These trims in 530i are black.
I would like to know how to remove the air bag to get to these trim pieces ? Do anyone knows the part number of these trim pieces ??
Thanks,
Ching-Ho Cheng

Hi Icc014
To remove the airbag you have to do the following:
1. Disconnect the negative terminal of the car battery completely and wait 1 minute.
2. If you look at the bottom (6 o'clock) position of the steering wheel rim, from underneath, you will see a small rectangular slot. There is only one on the steering wheel.
3. You need a flat-blade screwdriver about 5mm diameter shaft and 5mm width tip.
4. Push this screwdriver up through the slot until you feel a springy resistance (about 2 cm inserted before you feel this resistance.
5. The resistance must feel like a tough spring!!!
6. Push straight up another 1 cm or so and the airbag will pop out.
7. Internally, there is a spring clip that holds the airbag in 4 places. By pushing up with the screwdriver on the bottom middle part, it releases all 4 retaining lugs at the same time.
8. Disconnect the airbag connector in the lower spoke of the wheel inside (do not disconnect the connectors on the back of the airbag itself!!!!)
9. Put the airbag with the BMW label pointing up to the sky on the ground (or wherever).
10. The sttering wheel front plastic trim is held in place by 2 Torx screws. Undo these these
11. Be very careful when you now pull off the entire trim in one piece and in one go! There is a small risk of breaking the plastic bits! The trim is held in place in the steering wheel by plastic lugs. Since your car is new, these lugs will be stiff to get out of their respective positions. Just do it slowly bit by bit and you'll have no problems
12. There are small screws on the reverse of the removed plastic trim and you will see how to change the bits you want.
13. Part numbers: I'll get you the part numbers in a moment.
14. Fitting is the reverse!!!
15. Make sure the airbag connectors are connected BEFORE reconnecting the battery otherwise you'll have a red alarm signal that will need to be reset by the dealer or using a reset tool!
All the Best

Hi Again
I don't know what steering wheel you have so here are TWO part numbers:
1. If you have the bog standard steering wheel with a polygon airbag (NOT round) then the "silver" Ruthenium trims are: 32.30.6.766.012
2. If you have the steering wheel with a ROUND airbag then the part is: 32.34.6.763.377
3. If you have the Sports or M Sports wheel with round airbag, then the trim is ONLY available in black!
Hope this answers your questions.

I just went to my car in the parking lot and took a look at the steering wheel. There was no rectangular slot in the bottom (6 o'clock position) of the steering wheel. However, there was only a small circular hole there. I tried to use the BMW flash light (from the glove compartment) to see the hole, but it was too small to see what was in there.
Is that the US version of the rectangular slot ? There was no other hole or slot in the bottom of the steering wheel.
Thanks,

As always, Iceman is correct...!!
Although, I could not find the silver trim pieces for the sports steering wheel on the Parts Catalogue...
Sorry about that, my mistake....
ICC014:
The round hole is it. On some wheels it looks rectangular... In any case, you are correct, there is only one hole at the 6 o'clock position!

Hope you have fun!
