I am already spending money on a car that I don't have! My '04 545i is suppose to arrive tomorrow and two things that I want to do right away are replace the shifter with a short throw shifter and put an Mtech body kit on it. A few questions:

1) Who has the best short shifter on the market (and how much)?

2) How hard is the shifter to replace? Does it void the CPO warranty?

3) Once the Mtech body kit is painted professionaly, how hard is it to install? I have done this on numerous Saabs.

Any other items that you suggest I focus on immediately?

Thanks!
Troush

It won't void any warranty having a short shifter. I believe the best thing to do is put the Z4 shifter on - do a search

I mean the stock Z4 shifter. My understanding was pretty much all BMW manual shifters are interchangable as we all use the same transmissions (getrags I believe). The Z4 is pretty short - but not so short that things get super notchy and cheap feeling (I should know).

I guess I'm not sure on the specifics?

Yay! Looks really short in the E60!

The Z4 shifter was always a big hit because it's OEM style/quality (you know it'll fit and work) and it's cheap ($50-$60). That being said, give us your feedback if you do it!

I had a UUC on my e39- great shifter. But on my 550i I used the Rogue Engineering with the weighted shift rod. Works much better than the e39 UUC. I would prefer to be able to make the Rogue shifter lower in height like the UUC but that wasn't an option. I also had the Zechausen modified CDV installed. For the life of me I don't know why BMW mistreats us - the added cost to install a better shifter (and exhaust for that matter) is nil and yet they claim to be driver oriented and still hold out on us.

You won't regret this investment- It's been a long time and I still enjoy it every shift-

I'm looking for a crisp feeling when I shift, preferabbly "clicks" when it goes into gear.
I loved the stock shifter on my s2k.
