Thanks Heloha, that sounds the best way.........
Need to get some decent jackstands and go the way you suggest. I can see lifting from diff is OK and have 4 adapters to locate in rectangular cups each side
The only thing I'm not sure on is the best position to lift from at the front, .........
there is a small "pad" mentioned elsewhere here (about 4" x 2" and ABS plastic I think) which appears to what they mean....not convinced.

I've used it many times - works fine. That's why it's there.

Thanks bdkinnh.......Apologies for appearing a bit thick.....
was just wondering what was behind this - not appreciating that the item in question was meant specifically for lift purpose.
Was looking for something that looked a bit more rigid.....
Now i'v investigated a bit further I see what you mean.......
Cheers.......

My Ride: Metallic gray '05 545i Sport Black Leather with HUD, Step, Nav, PDC, CWP, K&N Air Filter, Black RPI scoop, Black painted calipers, 35% F1 Pinnacle tint, 19" RDSport RS-2F rims with Continental ExtremeContact DWs.
If this helps, I painted my calipers today. To put jack stands under the rear jacking points, simply jack up the front enough on one side to get the rear tire on that side off the ground, and place your jack stand under the rear jack point on that side. Let the front down, and the rear pivots up even more. Do the same for the other side, and you've got the rear on stands. Reverse the process to get her back off the stands, no problem.

i know this thread is two years old but what dimensions is the smaller section of the block of wood. This is the part that enters the jack point i understand. My e60 has runflats so it doesnt have a spare or a jack and i want to jack up the car so i can remove the wheels to paint my calipers. I have a trolley jack and so will need to use a block of wood similar to the one in the pic.... i havent actually physically looked under the car in order to have a look at the jack point but i might have to in order to get the right size block.
thanks

My Ride: 2005 545i, Silber-grau/grau. Vanilla flavored except for cold WX pkg.
I also needed the dimensions of the jackpoints to adapt my jackstands and garage jack. The dimensions of the jackpoints are complicated by the fact that they are tapered slightly, but the best I could come up with for the bottom (top?) of the jackpoint are: Length = 57mm, Width = 32mm, Height = 15mm. This will fit snugly into the base of the jackpoint but make your adapter height 17mm to make sure it seats.
The "hockey puck" was curved on the underside to fit the cup on my garage jack by using a contour gauge and my lathe. The grain of the wood is not maximized for strength but it should be enough for an E60.
My jackstands are old, designed for cradling an axle, so the bottom of the adapter is formed to fit over the ends of the cradle.
Hope this helps.
