I allways use steel brush and zink paste. Works very well.

You cant see this with wheel on right?

Why worry about it. The part of the wheel next to the brake rusts alot and that is visible and is what I try to wax and keep clean.

A small amount of copper or other grease applied to it and the rust wont cause you any bother, the biggest issue it causes is getting a wheel off if left, ok in a garage or tyreshop, but by side of a motorway ..this grease also slows down the alloy to steel corrosive effects.

This issue isn't just on BMW's -- pretty much every car I've seen with the wheels off does this...
