Guys,

I did a number of searches on how to replace the front pads and reset the service indicator. Having found all the answers I have now carried this task out and thought I would share my experience.

My pads were getting a bit worn with the iDrive saying I had 1900 miles left. It was a nice day so I thought I would replace them. Using the information from the Gallery/TIS Information on this forum, I replaced the pads. They still had a bit of meat on them and the wear sensor looked ok.

Rebuilt everything and tested brakes, all ok. Went to reset the iDrive and no go! I ended up with a red warning saying replacement overdue. Every time I tried to rest all I got was -9000 miles. I tried everything but it would not reset.

Took left front wheel off again and replaces wear sensor. Boxed it all back up again. Went to reset via iDrive and hey presto! Worked first time.

I suggest that the wear sensor is replaced every time. If anyone wants any more info PM me.

Glad you got it all worked out. It feels good knowing that you saved money on your brakes by doing it yourself.

I've got a similar problem but fitting a new cable has not worked.

I've reset service items before and everytime I try to reset the front brake pads it just tells me -9000 miles.

I bought a new cable from BMW yesterday thinking that would solve it but it still won't reset. Is there a procedure for fitting the cable? I did it with no key in the car then put the key in and tried resetting and it keeps reverting to -9000 miles!

I did not use BMW pads but the recess was there for the sensor to slot into so I doubt its the actual pads.

Another thing is the 'vehicle check service' which was due in may and I cannot reset that either! If I scroll through then selct it by holding the trip button it just shows an orange triangle and won't do anything else.

I'll try doing it all again

EDIT: Just tried it again and after a few attempts the brake pad has reset to 25000. Phew!

Another problem is its showing stat service overdue but I it wont offer a RESET option. Calling it up so the icon appears in red works and then I hold the trip button and all it does it show an orange triangle for a couple of seconds then it goes away??

The Statutory Service is BMW-speak for MOT time - you can reset it in iDrive.

My front brake pads and rotors also need a change ..Just checked with BMW and they want ~ $900 just for the front!
Planning to do this myself by following the TIS.

any tips and tricks from your experience doing this? How long did it take and did you need to get the special tools?

thanks in advance.

First and foremost, make sure you have proper hydraulic jacks and jack stands. The last thing you need is a trip to the hospital. Next, make sure to get a torque wrench, this will ensure every bolt is tightened to BMW specs.

Lastly, change the sensor and use a brake pad that you feel comfortable with. Meaning, if you like the OEM performance, go with a pad close to OEM performance such as Textar Centric, which is what I used. Some people use Axxis and various other aftermarket brands in attempt to mitigate brake dust, but come to find the performance is lacking in comparison to an OEM pad.

thanks a lot. did you need to buy the special tools in the TIS and did you bleed the brakes after the change? I have done pad/rotor changes in other cars like honda but I am not sure if the E60 has the same mechanism.
