Hello E60 owners,

Can someone please tell me exactly where the oil filter is located in my 2007 530i? I have read the DIY forum and I have managed to successfully locate the small panel underneath the engine and removed it and found the oil drain plug. However, I am not successful at locating the oil filer location.

Thanks in advance for your response.

It's at the front , left side (drivers side)of the engine. It has a black cap about 4 inches in diameter. Just unscrew the cap with a strap wrench or possibly by hand. It has an "o" ring to seal it so it only has to be tightened by hand. It is visible without removing the engine cover, just open the hood and it will be there between air cleaner and engine.

Hi Zen,

Thanks for your prompt reply. So, it's not at the bottom of the car but at the top? So, simply open up the hood and look for it as you have described it here?

I'll give this a shot. Thank you again.

Your 07 E60 needs an oil change already? You're going to change it yourself when your dealer will do it at no charge (scheduled) How many miles?

I changed mine at 5000 and 12000 miles. my car was delivered June 05 and the scheduled oil change isn't till April 2007. That's almost 2 years, a little rediculous I think.

Derektem, If you change the oil and filter, It takes 6.5 L or 6.9 qts. I just put in 7 qts. The oil filter is Fram CH 8081 or OEM 11 42 7 541 827. The Fram is about $17.95 and the OEM at a BMW dealer is about $16.95. You can get them for less, ordered by phone or email. If you want to go more than 6000 miles per change make sure you use Synthetic Extended Life oil.

!8.8 lb/ft torque for cap.

Hi jrsamps,
I've got 5700 miles on my '07 E60 now. I do a lot of freeway miles so I need to change the oil at around 5000/6000 miles interval. The dealer will only do it for free if it is time for the "scheduled maintenance" service. That is, when the light comes on in the car. Changing the oil frequently at these kinds of interval is good for the engine.

Thanks.

Hi zen,
Okay, I have successfully located the oil filter (as per your guidance). Thank you very much again for your help.

Sigh... the BMW dealer sold me the wrong oil filter. The parts girl sold me the E60 M54 engine's oil filer (11 42 7 512 300). I swear she asked me on the phone what year and model is my car and I told her it's "2007", "530i". They stuffed up. Sigh. Now I have to go back and get it exchanged. What a hassle this is.

So, do you find the OEM one better of the FRAM one better? Any thoughts?

The Fram and OEM are the same filter made by the same company. Fram and BMW just package it. The actual filter in each is made by Mann in Germany. The actual Mann number is HU 816. I buy several of them at a time for about $9.95. I sent you a PM with details

regarding the Fram CH 8081. The catalog lists this number but they are now putting a different filter in the box which WILL NOT fit a 530I.
