My Ride: 545i - GONE
![Default](https://5series.net/forums/images/icons/icon1.gif)
just did the oil change myself today on the 545i. I too suffered from oil gushing out, but my oil pan was big enough to contain it; only had a little overspill here and there. I tried taking a torque wrench to the 8mm socket for the drain plug, but no go. I even took a closed-end wrench and leveraged it on the end of the torque wrench to give it some extra torque and still no go.
Ended up going to Autozone to get the 8mm socket head...came out pretty easy after that. Almost stripped the 6mm oil filter drain plug though, had to hammer in the socket head for a snug fit. I think the longest part of this DIY is having to pour in the 8.5 quarts of oil, its pretty simple other than that.
Also, I had to jack the car up onto these wooden planks my roommate made, they're 4 layers of wood all forming a right-triangle. Pretty clever, I dont think I would have been able to do this oil change without them. It gave me a chance to really crawl underneath and inspect around.
