Thanks to this board, I was able to follow the instructions for resetting my oil change, question is what does it mean?
My car, an ?05 530i, is no longer under warranty, and I took it to an independent mechanic and had the oil changed, and when I asked him to reset the oil change indicator, he said ?the car will reset itself?; I knew then he was wrong.
So, I read on this board about how to reset it, but now it says next oil change 14,000 mls.
Is this to say that my next oil change is due in 14,000 miles? I think that is way too long to wait for an oil change. I?m thinking about changing it in the next 9 - 12 months, which for me will be around another 7,000 miles.
Or does it mean that I?m suppose to change the oil when the odometer hits 14,000 miles? If so, my car is approaching 47,000 miles.
Which is it?
Thx

If you reset it via the button next to the speedo dial then yes you have 14k till it needs replacing. How long it gives will depend upon driving style. Mine usually resets to 20k as it's really only driven on motorways, though I do change the oil every 10k anyway.

That's what I'm thinking: the reset interval is way too long to wait for an oil change.
I wouldn't think of waiting 14,000 miles before changing the oil; I wish I could wait 14,000 miles, but I don't think that's healty for any car.
So, is there any way of having it reset to a more realistic interval?

Oil service interval is hard coded into the computer. It will count down by 1000 based on operating conditions (temperature, distance, number of starts, etc). If you take an extended road trip, it may also count "up". If you prefer 7000 miles oil change, you can change the engine oil at 7000 and then reset the service interval again.
