Mike the files are helpful, but they don't explain how to detach the bowden cable for removal, and/or attach for installation. It's pretty tight up there, even with the panel off, so I would have thought they would explain that part in a little more detail.

Mike/Rudy/Brianyo.......and everyone else who has been following my progress on this thread......IT'S FIXED !!

It cost me far too much money from the Stealers, but I figured it was something that I just had to get fixed as it was consuming me !

Total cost:

Replacement door handle assembly carrier ?18 - from Ebay (I was very lucky that someone had this exact right item for sale).

BMW Dealers (Vines Gatwick) - Cost of diagnosis, and fitting - ?126.

So all in all just shy of ?150 !

I did consider going to my local mechanic, but talking to him on the phone it was evident that he had not really come across this problem.
Even at the BMW dealership, I was looking over the technicicans shoulder and he did not really know what the exact problem was..........they had never come across this before.

I was quite happy with the service, I only booked the car in on Tuesday for them to have a look on a diagnosis basis only, but when they actually diagnosed the problem, and given I already had the part, they offered to carry out the repairs while I waited.

I'm gutted it has cost me this much, but I am very relieved that is finally fixed.

Wow. Thanks for the extended write-up and photos.

My right front door handle just broke where it connects on the leading edge. The rear is still attached, but I'm guessing I'm in for the same type of surgery.

I do have to say, as an aside, while this car is one of the best driving cars I've ever had (in 26 cars including recent ones from Porsche, Bentley, Merc, and many Audis), it's also the biggest POS, most unreliable car I've ever owned, including my 1986 Audi 5000 turbo quattro. That's how bad it is.

After I fix the door handle, I get to fix the rear window hatch (again), the washer fluid pump, the remote key fob sensors, and the transfer case actuator. It's never been 'right' for more than a week. Fix one thing, the next two things break. Sigh... Next car will be Japanese. /rant
