I was doing this very thing myself with another forum buddy of mine and without Allen's encouragement and knowledge, I could not have moved forward. I am looking forward to next weekend to finish this up.

I'm having the same problem and thinking of doing this project soon. Please take pictures if you can in addition to Allen's superb DIY.

here are a couple hints and tricks to be aware of...

turn the bushing all the way into the alternator bracket before re-installing

It will be easier to break loose the alternator by loosely leaving the upper alternator bolt in, sticking a pry bar in the orange circle, removing the lower bolt, and prying the alternator sideways until it is free. Once free, remove upper bolt and pull alternator forward. More Oil Leaks!   545i 545i 545i 545i 545i-altin.jpg

Yep, but thinking about doing the passenger valve cover and upper timing cover. There is a small leak there too

Might as well while you have most of the front clutter removed.
Keeping a close eye on everything you do as it will serve as my "Bentley Manual" for future maintenance.
