Hey guys,

Anybody ever mix their tires before? I have a flat in one tire so I was going to buy a pair of tires but my model isn't in stock anymore. Has anybody ever tried having 2 different sets of tires on their car?

You'll probably get several opinions on this and I don't usually recommend mixing tires (mostly because I don't like the aesthetics of two different tires on a side profile).

However, it's technically ok as as long as:
1) Make sure you do not mix tire sizes other than what is recommended, and
2) Always match tires on each axle
3) If your other tire on the same axle is well worn (anywhere near 50%), I'd change both tires on that axle to insure tire circumfrences match.

I don't have an issue with mixing max summer performance tires or A/S tires if they are matched on the same axle. I don't think it is a good idea, however, to mix winter/snow tires.

NEVER MIX YOUR TIRES
If you going to replace 1 of them then change both and not just 1.
Front pair or real pair. They don't have to be the same make for the from and real as long as they are in pairs.
Of course it would be the best for all tires to be the same make and model

+1. People run different sets front to rear all the time. IDEALLY, they all match, but not everything has to be ideal. It's fine.

I've discussed this issue with several very highly reputable mechanics - all specialize in BMWs and some of them are enthusiasts who own track-ready BMWs - here's what I've been told:

1. For handling and spirited driving you should have matching tires.

2. From mechanical standpoint, as long as the size of the tire is the same as the other three, it is totally ok to have one tire that is different brand. Again, as long as the size is exactly the same.

I also would agree with Scott - winter and summer tires would be a bad mix, I wouldn't do that.

I question the logic of the notion that front and rear tires should be the same design under any circumstances.

Consider ?

You are tire design engineer ?Foxtrot? and the boss tells you to list all the functions of the front tires. Your colleague ?Romeo? is to list all the functions of the rear tires.

Obviously the functions would differ significantly. Front must steer the car. Front must brake with increasing load (while braking). Rear must transfer power to propel the vehicle. Some must both steer and propel the car.

Those of you more astute, than I, and certainly ?F? and ?R? could expand the list of functions and how they differ.

Now if I was the boss of Foxtrot and Romeo and they both came back with the same list, and suggest the same design, they would need to dig out their resume file.

I would hope that the tire design engineers would consider the unique functions of a particular tire?s position and design the tire accordingly.

Now, if my job, as boss was to consider manufacturing cost (tooling) I might go along with fewer tire designs in our product line.

Thus I suggest that there is little, if any, reason to tell me not to run with Contis on the front and Mich on the rear. I am not saying it is a good scheme but I don?t think there is design logic not to.
