I couldnt find anything on the forum on replacing the Oil Drain Plug with an aftermarket magnetic one.

I am sure folks have tried it though. Any experience - good or bad? Is it worth it?

it is a great idea, as dropping the plug in the oild catch or oil drain pan is common, then you have to go fishing for a bolt in your oil swamp.

the magnetic one will juet stay attached to the socket.

if my car wasnt under warranty and i had to change my own oil, this would be an easy decision for me. get one. it'll be worth the few bucks the first tiem you dont have to dip you whole hand into an filled oil drain pan

I think there's more to than it just being convenient .. I have heard the magnet attracts imprities in the oil and the plug can be cleaned at oil change.
Not sure how true it is though.

even after one trillion miles and 30000000000 oil changes, the "benifits" of what that claims to do would be so insignificant, that it would make NO difference at all.

oil does its job just fine, doesnt need any gadgets or additives.

thanks for the input. I saw it here: http://www.turnermotorsport.com/html/detai...N-PLUG-MAGNETIC

"Magnetic Oil Drain Plug for Most BMWs
Part #:
DRAIN-PLUG-MAGNETIC
Applications: 1980 - 2010 (E30 E36 E46 E90 E92 E24 E28 E32 E34 E39 E60 Z3 Z4)
Turn your oil drain plug into an effective metal particle filter! This drain plug fits virtually all BMWs, and has a SUPER strong magnet built into it's tip, trapping iron and steel contaminants and safely removing them from the circulation.

This is a must for ALL BMWs, and simply installs in place of your existing drain plug. With every oil change you perform on your BMW, you'll be able to inspect for metal shavings and debris. Many times, if something is going wrong on your BMW's engine, the drain plug can give you an early warning. Our championship race team uses this info all the time (Ever find a piece of a valve spring in your oil? We have!) Be sure to get one now, and make the swap next oil change! "

My Ride: I have an 05 545i. It's a manual with a few options. This is my first BMW but I don't know how I'll ever be able to switch to something else.

For $10, it's a worthwhile investment IMHO. I had one on my old '94 Integra, but it also had 120K miles on it when I bought it

Like craig said, it's makes it harder to "lose" it in the oil (unless you have a drain pan that has a lid on it to let the oil drain into it) and I guess if there are any micro metal particles it'll pick'em up. Though I don't imagine these BMW engines create that many metal shavings

Have magnetic plugs in all my cars. Very informative to see how much fuzz they collect between oil changes. Found half a roll pin in the 67 Chevy II once. Asked every tech in Dad's shop "where'd that come from?" Got as many answers as techs asked. Found out a month later when it quit with no fire. 194 Hi-Thrift has two-piece distributor held together with a roll pin.
