(Based on conventional - NOT COMFORT ACCESS) Generally if the remote key cannot unlock or lock the doors it's possible the battery is going dead. Though they usually last 5+ years yours may be crapping out. This information is located in your owner's manual:

If you have Comfort Access (CA) the battery is replaceable - information is also included in the owner's manual - a pdf copy may be downloaded at the information section of this forum. Makes it very easy to search for info!

Hmmm won't start even when the fob is inserted in the steering wheel 'slot' ?? Does the car turn over ??? Is the idrive waking up ... other electronics coming on? ? ? If those things are waking up and the car isn't cranking at all it may be the starter?

I have these problems with only 1 fob. I can leave it in my pocket or put it into socket - no change = I got "strikeout key pictogram" and thats all. If I remember correctly - no electronics wake up...

2nd fob works properly.
