I don't think being a diesel or a petrol would change anything. If the filter is really more "high flow" it's better for both engines. Less restriction means little more air in the admission wich may result in a slight increase in hp. But i don't think it's noticeable.
Is this filter washable? I heard about a k&n that are washable? and how much did you pay for it?
Please post some results of the outcome! Thanx

Ok, I tested it out this morning when I go to work. Im not sure if Im just imagining it but the car does seem to be more lively, especially from mid range rpm up (2500rpm+). And mind you mine is the entry level 520i so if there's any improvement I'll know....haha. Engine sounds the same both from inside and outside the cabin (tho someone else mentioned there's a slight change in engine tone). Too bad there is no real way to find out if there's actual performance gained But I suppose for US$100 (yes that's how much it costs here in Hong Kong  ), it's a rather satisfying weekend project.

No, that was the working (or workman) gloves used everywhere in Hong Kong. Nothing to do with winter. Actually, Hong Kong winter is quite cold due to the moisture (humidity) in the air.

Thanks,

Hey is a joke ok, don't get too caught up, is just for sh*ts and giggles. I am from Hong Kong if you can read my info so of course I know those are workman's glove. I was just teasing Bunbun.

And just to let you know is only cold when you sleep in HK because there are no central heating. I don't wear gloves in HK coz really not that cold. Trust me I am from Hong Kong.

I got one of the first K&N filters for the 545i.

It gives a little more sound from under the hood (which is now drowned out by the B& but I can say there is no detectable improvement in accelleration as evidenced by the butt-dyno.

I can't see it hurting, however.

I agree. No audible difference and maybe a subltle performance gain. i.e. occassionally getting the traction light on indicating slippage when not expecting it would happen - which to me seems like it could mean a touch better performance. - although my rear tires could be getting more worn too.

The thing I noticed with the stock filter is how thick it was which although it may be more restrictive the added thickness may help with flow via additional surface area. The K&N was a bit thinner fwiw.
