Just an update...I'm going to order the iPod kit from Garry up in RI today. Since the company that makes the spec.dock is based in Atlanta I gave them a call about getting that installed also. I explained to the owner my situation and he is willing to install the iPod kit and the spec.dock for free. So my total cost for the whole set-up will be:
$241 (iPod kit + shipping) Thanks Garry
$189 (spec.dock OEM specific) Thanks 2point5
$0 (installation
) Thanks Matt from 2point5
For a grand total of $430. That is $162 less than what my dealer quoted me and the iPod/iPhone would have to be stuck in the glove box
Can't wait to get it all set-up and a big props to 2point5.com for making it possible.

it depends. put an mp3 cd into your cd player and see if it plays the files. if yes then you don't need the retrofit. if it does not play then you have to get the car coded to enable mp3 which is free with the proper bulletin
you can find the ipod interface @ www.aftermarketbulbsshop.com with or without the faceplate.

Sorry I meant I do want to enable mp3..
Ok i'm feeling a bit frustrated here because some of my answers seem to be still unanswered reading through these post.
I have a 2006 525i under factory warranty still w/NAVIGATION, SIRIUS RADIO, Bluetooth but NO CD Changer BUT it plays MP3 CDs just fine. However my car was pre-wired for the install, so today I bought the iPod Interface and installed it perfectly. Now what's happening is the iDrive is not recognizing the ipod auxiliary thus only displaying "FM AM WB CD" and "Ok to disconnect" with the BMW logo on the iPod.
I know everything is hooked up correctly so my last thoughts are: it has to be a software update which has to be performed... Later in the day I dropped by my local BMW dealership and requested i have a software update performed on my iDrive so I could access my iPod. I expressed that the service should be FREE OF CHARGE but they insisted that the update/install would be an hours worth of labor for $140??? They basically looked at me like I was being ridiculous that this service be FREE.
Is there any kind of defense I could use to enforce this FREE service? I have read somewhere here that there is some kind of "Service Bulletin" that allows this, but how do I find this? Is it a matter of printing out the Service Bulletin and showing it to them?
PLEASE HELP
Thanks again!

My E60 is same as your's except it's a 530i but wasn't able to play mp3 before but now with the update it does. Good luck.

the one with the two holes are empty shouldn't they have something in it, there are two wires one brown and one brown red.
Now the other is I think green can't remember but it is in a different connector what gives with this crap

No guts! Would anyone know if this is a trend, or if it's normal?
I called my dealer and they wouldn't tell me anything over the phone and "suggested" I come in so they could look at it.

Ok...hopefully someone can answer this question.
I have a 05 545 with CD Changer, and NO NAV. My in dash CD player does NOT play mp3s. I've called my dealer and asked them if they can code my cd player to play mp3s, and they told me no. Either it will, or it won't play mp3s. This doesn't seem to be correct, or is it?
Everyone that I've read that have had this done, has had a Nav. What about if you don't have Nav, can the cd player still be coded to play mp3s?
Help!!!!
