Hello...first post here. I'd like to start by saying thanks...as I have found all kinds of helpful information since getting my new car.

If anyone can help me out I would greatly appreciate it. I just got a 2005 545i and attempted to install the ipod interface. I ordered the bmw part on the internet, saved some money, and assumed I could make it work without going to the dealer. I did/do have the 6 disc cd changer installed and was functioning with no problem. So all I did was took out the 6 disc changer, unhook the MOST device, and hooked up the MOST device into the back of the ipod interface.

My ipod will charge when plugged in. It even says device connected and it will show a song being played. However, I can't get to the input via idrive. All I have listed is FM, AM, and CD. When the 6 disc was hooked up, the CD input could be chosen via idrive, but with the ipod interface I can't.

Any ideas? I'm assuming I need a software update, but I read where others didn't have any problems. I have no idea where to check to see what version I'm currently running. I do notice that idrive takes a little longer to boot up after I put the key in now since I've installed the ipod interface.

I apologize I don't have a signature yet...but if there's any other helpful info about my car specifically I'd be glad to provide it. The build date was 10/04 (an early '05 I guess). Thanks!

IMO I think you need a software update. I am sure other members more versed than me on this topic will chime in (like kscarrol ). GL and to the forum.

I haven't given that a shot yet to be honest. My hunch is no. I'll burn an mp3 cd right quick and try it....

It would not read mp3...idrive said "the medium can not be read". Strike 2.

I appreciate the information! Do you know how I need to go about asking for this and how much it might cost me? Should I put my cd changer back in and then go ask for an mp3 retrofit? Or leave it as is and just see what they say?

Thanks again.

If yours is out of warranty like mine, I wouldn't worry about asking for the quote. If you have warranty, I guess it would depend on your relationship with the SA or your dealerships 'mod friendly' rating...
Call another dealer and ask if you have to...

I should add, the software upgrade was included in their quote to install the Aux cable...

Just got off the phone with the dealer and he quoted me 2 hours of labor ($210 total) to do the software upgrade for the ipod interface. Seems high to me but I'm new at this...opinions?

My quote has $250 for labor. $40 bucks for cable install, $210 for upgrade I wonder? This would make sense as it doesn't seem the actual cable would be a lot of work.
