installing left brake light

Hi guys,
My left brake light went out yesterday. I called BMW service to ask if I need to bring it there to replace it.
They said I need to bcoz of the computer.
I changed the bulb on my previous car 02 325i easily without going to BMW service center.
I was wondering if this is true.
