The mounting position in my car is really nice because you can see the road on the left very cleary and don't have to tale your eyes off the road when looking at the GPS. I really like it, I think you would too. How far does the bracket extend from the center console? I am not quite sure how you could fit in in there.
the gps fits in the little compartment under the indash cd player but the shift knob seems to get in the way so I will most likely go your route.

I plug mine into the outlet in front passenger foot well, Attachment 68208 but I haven't looked under there to see if there is a more elegant solution for hiding the wire.

That is what I wanted to do until I thought that some idiot friend of mind would jam his feet up there and rip out the entire socket and break the outlet.
