As a keen DIY owner I change my oil and filter before iDrive indicates that it is required.Due to my low annual mileage I usually carry out the work annually but this year I have gone over .What a shock I had a few days ago! After the last oil change I reset the oil service and iDrive showed 19000 miles. This figure has counted down,as per normal, and after 14 months was showing 9000 miles at the end of November. On the 2nd of December the figure dropped to 700 miles! On the 4th December it dropped to 600 miles and I had only driven about 20 miles. So,today ,I have changed the oil and filter and have reset the oil service which now shows 19000 miles again.
My question here is ,how can a system go from 9000miles to 700miles in 2 days?Perhaps BMW need to look at an algorithm that is used in iDrive?

I've read about new low mileage cars suddenly demanding an oil change 4,000 miles from new. Those cars were pre-registered.

I'd say that the oil change algorithm must take time into account. Say you only did 2,000 miles a year you really don't want to wait 9 years before the car demands an oil change. Looks like you get about 19,000 miles or 15months...

Exactly, but you don't want this sudden drop without warning.I think the time factor starts from when the car is built (which could be,say,9 months before purchase) unless the dealer resets everything at the pre-delivery inspection. If mileage is also monitored and oil service was based on 19000 miles or 15 months, whichever came first, a more sensible "count down" on mileage would result.Obviously,I now know not to wait beyond the 9000 figure if I continue with low annual mileage.

I have a 2007 530i E60. Changed the oil and filter yesterday but can not find out how to reset the Oil Service indicator.
Ant idea on how to reset the Oil Service and the amount of miles between service?

Thanks in advance

You now have the details on resetting. When reset ,the mileage will show 19000miles,counting down in 1000mile steps.

My oil change is showing 4200, 2 weeks ago it was 6000! I'm guessing the weather is having an affect but its not been any short journeys.

Interesting. 19,000 miles after oil service reset in the UK. For the US-spec vehicle, it is 15,000 miles, and we're already complaining that 15,000 miles is too long. I do my own oil change at intervals (15,000) and at half-intervals (7,000 - 8,000).
