I talked to my bmw shop today and asked about removing the phone cradle in my E60. They said that the cradle is electrically and/or electronically linked into the idrive, so that if you remove it you'll get an error on your idrive system. Is this true?

I'm thinking no but I may be mistaken. I think others here have removed it before and I don't remember anyone mentioning an iDrive warning...

Seems to me to be a poor engineering choice - to push a button to open the top, then another button to either open up the small compartment or lift up the holder.

Seems like a lot of work just to get to that cooled can of soda pop that you've been waiting for...

Nothing electrical on my 2008 535i. I removed the upper tray a couple of days ago and there were no wires or connectors anywere near the cradle. Now, keep in mind I had the stock tray with the closable lid, not an optional phone cradle...that probably would have electrical circuits to power the phone.

Thanks everyone for posting all their information. I had a coin inside the center console that would roll around every time the car would stop or accelerate. The dealer wanted 300 dollars to remove the coin. So, thanks for saving me 300 dollars!!!

For future reference. I removed my phone tray and no errors came on in the idrive. Happy to have more space in the center console.
