Anyone know what the two rectangular cutouts are on the sides of the trunk towards the rear? You can see the one on the right if you take off the trim panel covering the battery. It vents directly to the outside of the car and is covered by rows of thin rubber that hinge upward. What in the world is this for? I can't find it in parts diagrams of the E60 to save my life.

My guess is they're to provide ventilation--for the battery on one side, and all the electronic controllers on the other side.

Those are just air vents. If you look at those from the outside while closing the trunk lid you would see the rubber flaps swing out as the air escapes. Of coarse you can't really see them from outside unless the bumper is removed.

The real reason I ask is that they rattle and also that I don't WANT air ventilation if I'm going to have a big subwoofer playing in there. But I understand needing ventilation for the battery, that's certainly a requirement for car audio competitions anyways. I'm going to have to figure out how to stop the rattle while leaving them functional I suppose.

Found it on realoem also as part of the bumper diagram, thanks for mentioning 'bumper'
