I did this mod with Z3 3,0 rod - it is not that short (I mean the part above surface) and a bit shortshift as well... to get that white ring loose you need to rotate it with 2 screwdrivers in direction it goes (in e36 it went in other direction then in e60)... then simply pull it up easily, no force needed... to get around loosing that clip just put it on soft cooper wire, direct it thaht way and push it with screwdriver back in place (in my case I had to scrub the new selector rod on sides because of more plastic making it wider then needed)... I will take a pic of my mod, it looks more "natural" then very short Z4 stick, at least for me...
