Footrest installation

My Ride: BMW 520da 2008 space grey ,
I need some help , I try to install the aluminum footrest (I search the forum for pics ) my question is:need to remove the old footrest or can I install the new one up to the old?

can you even do that? i think its pretty self explanatory if you just see the part you are replacing with......
