I'm not sure you can play mp3 without a hardware update on a pre-2006 car. I have a 2006 with Navi, and after the coding, mine still doesn't play mp3's from the cd slot. It does play mp3's from the DVD slot though. Also, I had a Dension iPod/iPhone interface installed, which has a USB input as well, so basically it's up to date now. I highly recommend you simply get a USB/Aux/iPod interface instead of messing with updating the firmware. You may end up with more problems than solutions.
Either way, sorry I couldn't actually help out. Good luck!

You labelled this as "navigation" and so we would assume that you have two disc slots. One for CD and the other for your navigation DVD or other music CD's. So I'm a little confused now.
You are correct Progman v20 or above. But you will not be able to do it unless you replace your M-ASK with (MY06+) or with a CCC (03/05 to 09/05, MP3 functionality has to be retrofitted via Progman)
you need to add these to your FA (vehicle order) +NAUX+KMP3 via CIP in Progman, you can do all this through NCS as well since you are already above the requirements. When you change the vehicle order man things will change but just have to make sure that the donor is updated too. I'm sure I can help you along the way. Just send me a PM.
Example:
E60_#1203&LCSW%0A08*NA73$205$217$226$229$300$302$3 19$339$354$403$430$431$438$441$442$459$473$481$488 $508$522$524$534$540$563$590$605$639$645$676$694$6 97$6UA$785$818$823$845$850$853$876$925$992$620$609-B110+NAUX+KMP3
Instead of taking to dealer, you can do yourself cheaper.
SUBJECT
CCC: MP3 CD Playback Not Available
MODEL
E60, E61 (5 Series) with SA 609 CCC-Navigation from 3/05 to 9/29/05 vehicle production
E63, E64 (6 Series) from 3/05 to 9/29/05 vehicle production
E90, E91 (3 series)) with SA 609 CCC-Navigation vehicles produced up to 9/29/05
SITUATION
The MP3 option is not available in the audio menu. When an MP3 CD is used, it is not recognized as a valid CD.
CAUSE
The stability of earlier CCC (Car Communication Computer) software did not allow for proper MP3 functionality.
PROCEDURE
1. On a customer complaint basis only, retrofit MP3 functionality using Progman V20.00 or higher.
2. Refer to the SI B09 05 01 Coding, Individualization, Programming (CIP), for the "Retrofit" procedure.
3. Select "MP3" from the retrofit list and follow the on screen instructions for retrofitting MP3 capability.
4. The service code "KMP3" will be added to the end of the vehicle order as displayed in the Measures Plan.
5. After the procedure is complete, turn the ignition off and wait 5 minutes or until the driver's switch
block LED goes out. Check the functionality of the system.

Ok, thats very odd because I enabled MP3 play back on a 2003 e60 with M-ask last monday morning. Let me clarify some thing, MP3 playback has always been available right from the start of production but BMW disabled it due to problems with the software, they made an official retrofit available some time around 2005, you do not need a CCC for MP3 playback M-ask units can play MP3`s as well.

At the time i bought my '04 car in 2008 it didn't have MP3 playback. The BMW dealer updated M-ASK with latest software and MP3 was enabled.
If you have acces to coding software try to add +KMP3 to car's FA, otherwise trip to indi or dealer for update with Autologic / SSS is the only way.
Very informative. I was just going by BMW's SB, I assume it could be limited, they usually are. Question though....... Let's say you go ahead and add NAUX+KMP3 to the vehicle order wouldn't you need to update the M-ASK or CCC hardware?
That's why I've always loved this site.

Funny thing, since you guys stated the above I figured I try it out:
I added KMP3 to a 2005 525i's FA and then recoded car. Made sure it was coded to CAS and LMA and put an MP3 CD in the M-ASK and tried to play and it said "Medium cannot be read" ....this MP3 CD is scratched to hell but still plays in my CCC fine. Perhaps it was the CD. I told the owner to go ahead and burn another and make sure it plays in other sources then try it. Interesting enough that the donor CCC is a 2005 or 2006 in my 2004. But my 2004 was also pre-wired for navigation. Were there 2005's that were actually pre-wired for navigation? I think his production date is 09/2004....he definitely has an M54 engine.
