Hey deocool,

was wondering what actually inspired u to remove the single cd player, coz i have not come across any mod which involves that.

any mods or just to kill time?
Good question , the thing is the CD player i wanted to remove doesnt want to work (mechanism is allright, CD gets in but doesnt start playing) CD tab in entertainment menu stays blank as well. They spent about an hour in dealership during my previous servicing trying to figure out what the problem was, suggested to leave the car there, i couldnt at that time so the CD player is still out of work. i have a good specialist in things like that not working in BMW stealership so i was thinking to give it to him for a check .It obviously has to be taken out first. THATS the genuine reason, not my curiosity

well, removing that means killing the iDrive, so something tells me he'll be putting it back in shortly after he figures that out.
Serious? Doesnt sound optimistic, ,especially just before i wanted to start the surgery, How can it potentially damage idrive?

that *IS* the iDrive. the unit with the CD drive in it controls the iDrive knob and the screen. If it's just a stuck CD your guy can probably get it out, but if it's more than that, even if he fixes it, it will likely need coding, which means a trip to the dealer. I'm not sure if/how far you can drive without one in place.

Thanks, Fvicente, for saving my time and, more important, preventing from doing stupid things. Much appreciated

Just to be clear. The MASK/CCC is built into the CD drive housing and its possible to remove the CD drive without killing the iDrive. All you are doing is removing the CD mechanism and leaving all the MASK/CC electronics intact.

That's what i was thinking of initially, but here another question arises, is it possible to repair it as a separate unit and put back or does it have to be approached as the whole thing (i mean together with idrove etc) and needs some special after repair coding and so on, which only dealership can do properly?

It all depends on how bad things are. The drive in there is no different from any computer drive, so if the problem is minor then you wont need coding because the drive itself do not hold the coded information its the memory in the MASK. But how easy would it be to remove the drive from the MASK leaving the MASK functioning I don't know.

Thanks, Bruce. So after all those comments, i guess the best option is a dealer
