The curved/directional vanes pump more air for better cooling. Probably more expensive as well.
My style of driving doesn't warrant exotic brakes, but, I do like the looks of drilled rotors.

I would never suggest replacing the rotors without replacing the pads at the same time. Never crack the bleeder screw when doing a rotor/ pad install. All you will do is chance letting air into the system for no reason, the caliper will push back if you use a clamp to push it in.
