Yes, http://ecubb.bmwecu.org/board/ there are plenty info about the software that you need (it is DIS v44) and there are links to download too.

or....

get one from www.bavariantechnic.com to ease the pain.

ok so i got it installed on a VM workstation and it seems like it freezes alot. sooooo im currently working on installing it on a laptop natively. im looking for SCO Open SErver 5.0 software.. i can install this software as the base OS on the laptop, then install the DIS v44 over it and it should give it better performance. i also am looking for the obd connection to work with this software, so if anyone knows which cable will talk with the software plus laptop it will be well appreciated.

Just out of sheer curiosity what will your homemade laptop do that this readily available product won't?

bavariantechnic.com

Are you going to save any money or be able to do things that the bavtech device cannot perform?

The enthusiast package is US$ 287. An used IBM T30 costs ~ $150. Then you have to download software (illegally, by the way since none of us own the rights to it), buy a cable and then hope that the 6-year old laptop that you've bought doesn't break.

I like monkeying around with computers and software and "sticking it to the man" as much as anyone, but I'm just trying to figure out what I would gain by making my own system versus buying one that is commercially available.
