Not having a great history with using strap wrenches, I was mildly hesitant to use one when I went to remove the oil filter cap from the housing on my N52 engine to change the oil filter. However, I also wasn't too excited about plunking down $35-40 for the BMW socket that wasn't compatible with my torque wrench. Accordingly, ebay came to the rescue. The socket that fits the oil filter housing cap of my N52 ('07 530i) is 86mm in diameter and has 16 flutes. This turns out to be the same as Volvo.

As such, I found an aftermarket Volvo 86 mm 16 flute socket for less than $11 (inc S&H) from a seller named rooprict. Now, all is right with the world and I can use my torque wrench to tighten the cap after installing the new filter. Even better, I don't have to worry about any slipage during removal or installation of the housing cap.
