Hi,

I tried to change my E60 530d Engine air filter, i followed the acrobat guide and removed strut brace etc, but there is one screw on the back left hand side of the box that i just cannot get to!

Has anyone else come across this problem?

P.S I am not refering to the micro filters

Not sure how you cannot reach the top left screw, did you remove the microfilter housing and panel that it sits on? It is in an awkward place but I had no trouble reaching it myself? Can you explain exactly where the screw is so I am sure we are talking about the same screw.

Are you sure the screw you are referring to really needs to come out? I don't recall any that were particularly awkward when I changed my filter. Presumably you've tried jolting the filter-housing upwards?

From recollection, all the screws/bolts were 5 mm. allen-key.

I might have the same problem. I was just trying to remove the air filter housing to access the breather filter housing and check if I have the old or new filter, but never got the air housing off and mine is stuck in the rear as well. However I could not feel any other screws back there than the top one that I removed so I'm not sure if I just need to increase the degree of violence, if there really is another screw back there or if it's snapped together somehow.

Is the one you refer to the one on top of the filter housing, just below the cabin air duct? If so you need to remove the duct as well by releasing the 3 plastic nuts and remove a torx. Look at for example Anzafin's swirl flap post for details.

Hi folks,
This is the worst air filter to change in the world! Thankfully i now have 535d and its easy. When changing air filter you must remove slightly more than the microfilter housing in fact both panels that the microfilter housing sit on must be removed. You will be amazed how dirty they are cause i am sure the dealers dont change them. They are supposed to be changed every 2 oil changes. I can now change my one every oil change cause it takes 5 minutes. The last time i changed my air filter on my 530d it took me over an hour!

Good Luck.

I removed both panels under the microfilter, but the air duct is still in the way. The screw is pretty much directly under the air duct, if you put your finger down there you should feel the head of the screw. Very akward to get anything down there. I used a allen key on a socket wrench with an extension bar, but the air duct gets in the way so that it will not line up to the head of the screw. Possibly will try an ordinary allen key next time.

I bought a new 58 piece rachet screwdriver and bit set from halfords, the extension neck on it is flexible making it easy to take out that screw. Remember the screw does not completely come out. And remember the screw at the front inside the housing also an SOB, I missed it and it had me confused for 10 minutes.
