I need to disconnect the battery for about 10 minutes while I weld the mounting bracket back onto the rear silencer with an electric welder.

The bracket has come away from the end of the silencer (just behind the tailpipes) and just needs tacking back on. I have access to an electric welder but have been told that I need to disconnect the battery before attempting to weld it.

My question is whether disconnecting the battery for a short time will cause any problems with the car's memory etc. (will i-drive remember my settings?)

I remember in the days before i-drive that disconnecting the battery meant you needed the radio keycode to reactivate it afterwards, but I guess this isn't applicable to the E60.

Any pointers or words of caution will be appreciated.

Not at all. I disconnect my battery for more than 10 hours while doing speaker, amp, DVD,... installation. No problem at all. Take my words for it.

Just to confirm, I also had my battery disconnected for 3 hours the other day and the only thing that I had to reset was the clock - all other settings were fine. Disconnecting the battery is surprisingly easy - 10mm socket (if memory servers me!) on the Earth connection to loosen it, then make sure you tuck it out the way when unplugged

One more thing that power window anti-trap function message will be done. Reinitialize it by testing all four windows so see which one does not go up/down automatically. Found one, roll it up all the way up, release button momentarily, and try to roll up again. You can do it for all four windows if you like while watching message go away on i-Drive screen.
Any more question, please let me know. I'm here to help.

Best Regards,
Fred

Did the job yesterday - as per the advice and feedback given, all was needed was a 10mm spanner.

After disconnecting the battery for about 10 mins, then reconnecting it all I had to do was reset the time on the clock. (as expected from the replies).

Put a small tack of weld on the exhaust bracket just behind the tailpipes and she's as goos as new.

Glad I asked, as I was a bit aprehensive about doing this.

Thanks guys
