Hi all,

Hope someone on here can help me out... im going mad trying to find the problem.

My car (E60 525d) was involved in an accident, which blew the drivers airbag and the seat belt pre-tensioners and the battery lead.

I have replaced all of these parts, and also the airbag control unit (out of another 5 series which had no airbag deployed), but i still have the airbag fault light on...

Does anyone on here know if there is something else that needs to be replaced if this has happened, or is it now just a case of having the control unit reset. 1 thing i have not changed is the coupler ring on the steering column... is this necessary??

Can someone who has TIS have a look to see what is says....

Many thanks in advance.

I think the airbag warning is "sticky" - that is, once it has detected an airbag fault it stays on even after the fault is corrected. The thing to do is to take it to your dealer to get the fault cleared. I created this situation once by taking my steering wheel apart and disconnecting the airbag, then starting the car. The fault was detected and remained active even after I reassembled everything. The dealer cleared the fault and all was ok again...

Good luck, Jon.

I'm more interested in finding "airbag experts"- how do you become one and how many accidents it takes?

dont know how many accidents it takes, but im sure theres a few people out there who know the e60's from top to bottom...

Thanks for all the comments so far guys, hopefully a reset is all it needs..... thought that changing the airbag control module from an "uncrashed " car would have done the trick!!.. must be a flag somewhere else in the depths of the other units!

Maybe, just maybe, it's the passenger airbag sensor? There IS a Service Bulletin for that, may want to get that checked just in case.

first of all you change your airbag unit only after three accidents, meaning you had your airbag blown three time. Second, you changed everything correctly(and I suppose it was reseted) so you ether have something else to change ,which have to be determined by diagnostic tool, or the unit is programmed incorrectly. If you live in LA or close to I have the tool and can help you out.

Hi there,

thanks for the info..... I only changed the control unit because i couldnt get the airbag light off. if thats the case, i think i will refit my old (original) unit...it definitely hasnt been hit before so 2 more accidents left ;-) .

Have changed all blown components, so im hoping it is just a reset.... funny thing is, that a Snap on solus diagnostic tool doesnt see the airbag module.. Got an appointment on Monday with a BMW specialist, so will see what comes from that...

Thanks for the advice...and offer for help.. im in the uk though!

Now that is something different, it could just be a loose wire somewhere. If the system doesn't even see it then that is probably what it is IF the module is working properly. Good luck at the specialist
