I noticed that the filter box has internal checkered fins at the bottom.

I also noticed that the top part going to the MAF and throtle body also has them. That's weird.
My 6 cylinder Maxima don't have any of them. I guess BMW don't want to let loose all available
"horses" so as not to compete with their top end models. This (our) engine has a lot
of potential.

I put my trusty Dremel to work and got rid of the checkers, just straigth fins running
parallel to the airflow.

I also got rid of the vertcal fins adjacent to the intake holes.

brabusw209amg told me to use a snip plier. It's a good thing I found one in my tool box. A real time saver.

I wish I have Quaife ATB already, like Miguex, who is also in the process of doing this mod.
With the Dual Duct Mod, it just accelerates effortlessly and easily revs higher rpms unlike before.
You gotta see/feel it yourself. I also added the pictures to my album. Good luck

My Ride: I have an 05 545i. It's a manual with a few options. This is my first BMW but I don't know how I'll ever be able to switch to something else.

The thought process of this makes sense to me, but I wonder if BMW meant to put those in there? Maybe to catch debris and such, i dunno? But that doesn't explain why they put it on the top-side of the airbox too.

The real question is, does the M5 airbox have the checkered pattern or is it smooth?

Either way, the dual-duct mode looks good, esp with that heat wrap now

Any M5 owner that can clarify this?

I was thinking the exact same thing, perhaps BMW deliberately desinged the air box this way.

The m5 does NOT have the checkers. I gotta do this mod some day.

Exactly! I told you! Like you said Rizbel: "BMW don't want to let loose all available
"horses" so as not to compete with their top end models( like the 7series?). This (our) engine has a lot
of potential."

I also wonder the 550i has the intake with fins and checkers too?

I'll check with Scott's car when I see him next time. Anyone with the Dinan intake can confirm they have fins or not?
