Adding speed camera POI to your SatNav DVD
#181
Thanks Banglebox_530d!! I did download the files that are databases/POIs, but the file extensions are .CSV and .GPX formats.... do I need to convert them to particular file extensions or can I just use them into the steps that mathmos instructed for us? I got both Red Light Camera Locations and Speed Traps, each consisting of 2 files of CSV and GPX extensions, so I have 4 files altogether. What can I do with those?
Anyone please? THANKS SO MUCH!!

Use the CSV files. CSV = ASC
As per instructions from Mathmos:
11. Download the perl script file from here and using the .asc file containing the uk speed camera locations obtained from
pocketgpsworld.com, create the idx and url files.
(To do this you'll need a version of Perl, I used Cygwin from www.cygwin.com. If you use this version, make sure that you select the
Perl modules when installing it.

Thank you Banglebox_530d!!
How do I install the Perl Modules? which files do I need to download?
For the conversion of CSV to idx and url files using Cygwin, is it complicating or automatic?

All, this is a great and helpful site. I wondered if anyone has done this with a 2007-1 DVD as the code in the ENG.LSC has changed a little.
This is not described and what I am trying to figure out. If you notice this is a link to the icon. Most of the numbers are the same except the 4 chaacters before the /ICONS/. I have not been able to figure out what these numbers represent and some are repeated. Any ideas?
FYI, that PERl script is great!
Code:
#ICONDSC <category-id> <data-tree> ICONDSC 100 G508-G524-S031/ICONS/RR/POI_ENTERTAINMENT.PNG+G539-I0+G523-I2+G522-I1+G521-I2! ICONDSC 100 G508-G524-S035/ICONS/NAVI0X/POI_ENTERTAINMENT.PNG+G539-I1+G523-I2+G522-I1+G521-I2! ICONDSC 101 G508-G524-S024/ICONS/RR/POI_CINEMA.PNG+G539-I0+G523-I2+G522-I1+G521-I2! Has anyone cracked the problem of getting some audible warning such as a beep or series of beeps when approaching a camera location?

I've successfully added the UK speed cameras to my Prof Sat Nav. I used the most excellent instructions from Mathmos but since I'm a bit of a Linux geek (a geek with a BMW be afraid) and I don't like licensed software, I used Linux to create the DVD. For anybody else out there who's in a similar position this is what I did; Please remember that you have to follow the original instructions and just substitute these steps where appropriate. My DVD is 01-2007.
WORD OF CAUTION - This method does not suit the technically faint hearted. If you're not into Linux and don't have systems readily available then I wouldn't recommend this method. I use it because I've got the systems available and don't want to mess around with windows software that I wouldn't otherwise use. It works for me but your mileage may vary. You'll need an equivalent amount of disk space corresponding to the size of the DVD (approx 4.2G and the same again for creating the new DVD ISO image.
Anything starting with # is a command to be entered from the command line.
Mount the sat nav DVD. On my system the DVD drive is device /dev/hdc yours may be different.
# mount /dev/dvd /mnt/dvd
Create a directory to hold the DVD files and copy the data to that directory.
# mkdir /bmw-sat-nav
# cp -Rf /mnt/dvd/* /bmw-sat-nav/
Using your favourite text editor (midnight commmander for me) follow the instructions steps 3 - 10
step 11 - Download the zipped perl script and unzip it (do this in the directory that contains your speed camera ASC file)
# cd /speedcams/single-file-ASC
# wget http://www.zen102337.zen.co.uk/createidxurl.zip
# unzip createidxurl.zip
Make the script executable
# chmod o+x createidxurl.pl
Change it to Unix format
# dos2unix createidxurl.pl
Unzip the speed camera files
Step 12 - 14 follow the instructions as per the website editting using whatever you're using
# unzip pgpsw-speed-cams.zip
run the perl indexing script
# ./createidxurl.pl pocketgps_uk_sc.asc 9000
Step 15
Create a directory to put the new DVD ISO file in
# mkdir /bmw-satnav-iso
Create the ISO image
# mkisofs -r -R -udf -l -o /bmw-satnav-iso/satnav.iso /bmw-sat-nav
Now mount the image to check it looks like the original
# mount -o loop /bmw-sat-nav-iso/satnav.iso /mnt
If it looks good then burn the DVD using your favourite burner. I use the file browser under gnome but there's lots of alternatives
I hope this is useful to someone. If you use it and something isn't right then please let me know.

What actually happens as you approach a speed camera? - are you warned only by the appearance of an icon?
Can you control which icon is used?
Is there any audible warning?
If so, what?
Thanks
