I ordered a Paint Detective 8 paint thickness gauge from their website: www.paintdetective.com

I made an order last Sunday and got it on Wednesday. I consider the delivery FAST, due to I live in Finland and normally shipping anything at all over here takes a week or so. And I also consider this a bargain; 198? = 213€ = 283$ including shipping. Before this purchase I thought these gadgets cost honey, but surprisingly you can have one relatively cheap! Of course I know it's a low-end gauge, but I think I'll be happy with it.

I do my own car detailing, and have done couple of someone other's rides too, and this little gauge will be more than welcome to be a part of my equipment!

I detailed my 530d last autumn and since that I've been bit worried about the paint thickness, especially on doors, where I had to use quite abrasive products with several passes. I thought I would see numbers like 80-90?m, but got 120-180?m. So I think I'm safe to continue the maintenance of the paint with annual light polishing.

All in all, I highly recommend this gadget for everyone who does his own detailing. Five stars from me!

I have bought/ordered lots of new detailing products and some modding stuff too, and will be changing my summer setup I think in a month, so I am VERY VERY VERY anxious about all this. And when the time comes, be prepared for my photoing spree !!!

Well, they did ship it to Finland from UK, and I think they will ship to the States also. Email them or check their website.

Let us know how it works, as I need one badly for a friend who locates tons of cars for me.

I think it works very well and I am happy with it. I'm going to do a precise paint thickness chart of my car, so that I can follow the thickness in future when I'm doing my annual polishing.

You can measure the paint in microns or mils. Check here.
