Cool, sounds like a good idea. Since it isn't that dirty I just use water and Armour-All. Turns out pretty good.

Good idea to follow the cleaning with WD-40. It will displace any water that has found its way into electrical components. Great idea that makes sense.

I just got my 545 in November.

I have washed it myself every Saturday.? As part of my routine, I have wiped down the engine with a wet cloth.? Dust has not been accumulating so far....? my feeling is, if I remain diligent with this routine....? my engine will always look great, and will never need a major cleaning.

I do the same thing.....

This may sound rediculus, but the "Shark Steamer" does the trick, just decrease really dirty parts with simple green and steam and wipe away. Damn those info-mercials...so addicting

Breae60, does a shark steamer look anything like this low pressure steamer?

Basically yes, buth the shark kicks ass. You also gotta cover all electrical and fuses, and don't forget the xenon ballast. I used to clean my e46 engine once a yeat. No probs. I used foil and tape to cover parts...

I wonder if the Simple Green could go into the steamer tank. If it is volatile enough, would it vaporize with the water?

I have never cleaned the engine bay of a car before and was curious who does, at what intervals, and what do you use to clean it?

Thanks,
Kris

I haven't had an engine cleaned for quite a number of years now. Most engines now have plastic coverings hiding most of the oily bits but a few years ago, the engine was more exposed so to speak. I had it steam-pressure cleaned and left the engine running as the guy was doing it. Came out spic and span but ran very lumpy until it dried out. Pressure didn't seem to bother anything else under the hood though.

Not sure about the V8's, but the six cylinder E60's seem to have a shroud covering the bottom of the engine almost making it enclosed. Don't recollect seeing the road when I peered down through the engine bay so I'm not sure what would happen here with a steam clean.

Cheers.
