Hi all,

A friend of mine purchased a 07 M3 that had been smoked in. The dealership is going to do ozonination (sp?) on it, and a general detail. Can I have some advice on eliminating smoke smell? I know the usual stuff; air filters, scrubbing windows, leather seats and carpets. What about the seat foam for example? Any other tips?

cigarette smoke is a nicotine and tar stain that cannot be removed; like hotel rooms that have been smoked in over months, maybe years. the smell seeps into everything. it's insidious.
it's not like it was done once. it's over and over and over and over again..........after a while the stink is indelibly ingrained into the fabric of everything in the interior and can never come out. good luck.

My car was previously smoked in. I got it in June.

It's now November, and you wouldn't be able to tell anyone had smoked in it in the past.

What 1600 says is true - to an extent. The smell does get everywhere. It soaks into things. It'll eventually wear away.. never being *completely* gone, but it eventually reaches a point where you can't tell. Think: radioactive decay, half-life, etc.

I started by spraying air freshner into all the cabin air filters. Sprayed all of the carpets. I put those air freshner thingies into each vent.
I got it during the summer, so I'd frequently drive with all my windows open. Air circulation is good and will eventually help to move the smell away.

But basically... you're probably not gonna get rid of it overnight. Doesn't quite work that way...

You could probably accomplish something by replacing all the filters, shampooing all the carpets, etc. But remember the fabric on the chairs, on the ceiling, etc, all soak up the smell too.

Good luck!
