Heading over to pick up my new 535i this week.....just noticed the dealership has a great deal on a new 550i in stock--may have to take a look at it and if I can get it for only $100 more/month than my 535, will see if they'll go for it...only question is it appears the 550i may not have active steering--would that be a deal breaker for anyone?

I think you'll find it comes down to personal taste. Many of us who have AS love it and would proabably call the lack of it a deal-breaker but there are just as many out there who don't like AS as much and wouldn't hesitate for a second to buy a car without it.

Have you test driven a car with it and one without it? Only you can really tell for sure if it's a deal-breaker...

That $100 factor makes it a tough call. Does the 550 have Active Cruise? HUD? Sport Option? All should be considered in the decision.

I have nearly no experience without the active steering ... except for Mrs. sixcard's 06 E90. That steering sucks!

I ordered my 530i without it and don't feel like I'm missing anything. Alignments are cheaper since you can take it anywhere vs. if you had AS and only BMW can do it.

While I was shopping around, I found an '08 550 Carbon Black loaded but without AS and had to back away...I had to have it again (04' 530). No regrets.

I do not have AS, but rest of my friends (6 of them) have the E60 with AS and I think my next BMW WILL HAVE TO come with AS, I love it....coming back to my car from an AS feels so 80's lol........

It would'nt be a deal breaker for me , I really like it but it is not a must have , to get a 550 for a "hun" more ..................... write the cheque and join the V8 Club !

Just curious, since I never had a AS, what makes it better?
I read the simple explanation from bmw web site and all it says is control the steering ratio based on speed.
Does it do more than that?
